The gallery exhibit opening reception on August 28 will be followed by artist talks and “The Courage to See,” a neuroarts-based photo walk led by documentary photographer John Abernathy on August 29 and an artist talk by Torrance York.
Fotophase, a nonprofit advancing photography’s role in the emerging field of neuroarts, will present its debut exhibition, Still, We See, at The Rangefinder Gallery at Tamarkin Camera in Chicago. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Friday, August 28, at 5:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday, August 29, with artist talks and a neuroarts-based photo walk led by independent documentary photographer John Abernathy, followed by an Artist Talk with acclaimed artist and educator Torrance York.
The two-day program brings the Fotophase mission into a gallery setting through photographs shaped by experiences of trauma, illness, transition, caregiving and personal change. Together, the works consider the potential for healing and transformation through the act of making, editing, and sharing a photograph.

Fotophase was founded to accelerate the study and practice of photography within neuroarts, an interdisciplinary field examining how the arts and aesthetic experiences affect the brain, body and behavior. While photography is one of the world’s most accessible creative practices, its role as a participatory aesthetic experience remains underrepresented in neuroarts research and programming. Fotophase develops photography experiences, community programs and research-informed methods centered on the act of making images.

We’ll photograph studio subjects and urban environments alike, gaining experience in lighting, exposure control, and composition that anticipate the unique tonal qualities of platinum / palladium printing.
This is a hands-on platinum / palladium printmaking workshop that begins with the capture of the image, and proceeds through the preparing of digital negatives, coating, exposing, and developing, as well as creating your platinum / palladium prints!
This workshop emphasizes both technical workflow and artistic decision-making — from the digital file to the tactile craft of traditional printmaking.

Bring your camera and comfortable shoes! We’ll stroll the streets and capture images to print later in the weekend. We’ll have lunch at a casual local favorite.

We’ll photograph models and dancers for both portraits and movements as we study and learn lighting dynamics and exposure management for high-contrast and detail-rich negatives, which are perfect for platinum / palladium printmaking.

Preparing your Digital Negative
We’ll learn about post-processing our images in preparation for platinum / palladium printmaking. Bring your computer and your images and get ready to print!

Join the Leica Akademie at Tamarkin Camera for a weekend with fine art photographer and director Mark de Paola!
The workshop with focus on capturing portraiture stories. Dissecting together the anatomy of character and plot development, as well as exploring both the literal and abstract possibilities of crafting story with photographs, students will come away with at a minimum of two distinct narrative sequences of photographs.
Set against Chicago’s iconic urban facades, you will work on assignment to adapt each assigned character to your own authored story. This masterclass is catered to photographers both beginning their artistic journey as well as those more advanced in the medium. Mark will explore how implementing and understanding how sequencing a narrative applies to many photographic genres and is critical to creating a completed body of work.
De Paola is long known for his fashion and fine artwork that has been revered as portraiture first, always striving for the most authentic and truthful essence and expression from a collaboration. This understanding of providing a space of safety and freedom in a creative space is a critical topic of discussion that each student will also explore with Mark and each portraiture collaborator.
