FIRST NEW YORK AUCTION A SUCCESS!
Tamarkin Photographica's first rare camera auction, held in New York City on May 24, 1997 at the Gramercy Park Hotel, was a huge success. Collectors and dealers from all over the world gathered together to purchase for a total $355,000 a mix of camera rarities including Leica, Nikon Rangefinder, Alpa, Rolleiflex, Zeiss Contarex, and Zeiss Contax. Moreover, there were a number of sales from an eclectic group of diverse rarities made by Kodak, Voigtlaender, Hasselblad and Canon.
Starting with a viewing period, a wine and cheese reception, and then the auction itself, Tamarkin Photographica's auction attracted international collectors and dealers from Germany, Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Switzerland, and Austria, and, of course, many American collectors and dealers.
Highlights of the auction were a chrome Leica MP that sold for $23,000, a black Leica M3 that sold for $9400, and a Leica M4 MOT with motor drive that was bid up to $8550. Among the Nikon Rangefinder gear there was a near mint Nikon SP in the original box that went for $4200 to a foreign dealer, and rare accessories like a S36 motor drive and a Model I Rangefinder housing that sold for $3000 and $3000 respectfully to an East coast collector.
Other major items in the auction were two rare, pre-war Zeiss pieces, a complete Stereotar outfit, made for stereo photography with a Contax that sold for $7000, and a complete 180mm Olympia-Sonnar f2,8 outfit that was knocked down at $4000. Important post-war Zeiss items that went for considerable sums were a complete Zeiss Hologon camera outfit which went for $8500 and a 180mm Olympia-Sonnar f2,8 that went for $4000.
There was also considerable interest in the lots of Leica accessories, and all in all, a higher percentage of the Leica lots sold than those of any other manufacturer, a trend which seems to hold world-wide.
Tamarkin Photographica's second rare camera auction, following the success last October of the Tucson auction, clearly demonstrates the demand in the USA market for an auction house specializing in photographic rarities-- specifically cameras, lenses, and accessories.
